Family medicine doctors are trained to serve the medical needs of all patients through their entire life. The specialty includes delivering babies, caring for children, tending to adult medical needs including womens’ health care and finally geriatrics. The family physician’s first job is to know the patient. Family physicians are particularly adept at managing complex cases involving multiple other specialties.
Family medicine is a form of medical specialty with a residency training program and certification board (The American Board of Family Medicine). Board certification in family medicine requires completion of a family medicine residence program accredited by the Accredication Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), maintenance of an unrestricted license to practice medicine and successful completion of examinations administered by the Board every 6 years.
